Brazilian Percussion Instruments - Of Gourd Afoxé - Handcrafted - 40x62Afoxé is a musical instrument composed of a small round gourd, covered with a net of plastic balls or shells similar to the Xequerê with the differential in which the afoxé is smaller. There are afoxes of wood gourd, coconut and plastic with beads or beads or shells around the body. Its sound is produced when you turn your beads/shells in one direction and the end of the instrument (the cable) in the opposite direction.
A long time Afoxé was only played in Umbanda Centers as well as in samba. Already today, the beautiful instrument has gained space in Reggae and pop music, rock, funk, technomelodia, liner, sertanejo and especially in Bahian music ..

My dad played drums professionally from the age of 13 and played for many people/ bands he played for Tony Bennett in the 60s and then in the 70s .He went an a South American tour with Tony Bennett in the late 70s and picked this up in Brazil . Has been in the family since in duffle bag a closet. he played with it very little .
